Why should I enrol in Al-Andalus Academy?
Al-Andalus (الأندلس) was the Arabic word used to describe the territory that included the Iberian Peninsula and cultural domain governed by Muslims between 711 and 1492 (today’s Portugal and Spain). Al-Andalus became an educational center for growth and advancement in philosophy, art and architecture as well as medicine, trigonometry, astronomy, pharmacology, agronomy and other fields. Taking its name from this legacy, Al-Andalus Academy aims to offer a holistic synthesis in knowledge that is oriented towards realizing the worship and knowledge of Allah.
What do you get when you join the Academy?
As a member of Al-Andalus Academy, you will receive full access to four components:
- Weekly Live Halaqa: The corpus of spiritual teachings in the Islamic tradition is filled with a number of works, most of which remain inaccessible to the non-Arabic seekers. In this section, a number of prominent texts are translated and taught in English by Dr Mohamed Ghilan. Works that have been covered include a complete translation and commentary of the entire set of the Hikam (aphorisms) of ibn Atā-illah as-Sakandari, Prohibitions of the Tongue, the Inner Dimensions of Fasting, and more.
- Al-Andalus Book Club: Started in 2017, Al-Andalus Book Club is a space in which Dr Mohamed Ghilan releases his yearly book list where he holds live sessions to discuss a number of important English publications through an Islamic lens. Themes explored include virtue ethics, existentialism, philosophy of science, psychology, political theory, and most recently artificial intelligence.
- Aqidah: The content in this component is designed to teach you how to orient your intellectual paradigm in line with a metaphysical system of thinking that is consistent with pure reason and derived from the Quran and Sunnah. Lessons in this section include the philosophy of language, the trivium, and foundational texts in islamic creed translated from Arabic and taught in English by Dr Mohamed Ghilan.
- Malki fiqh: In this section, jurisprudence in accordance with the Malki school is taught through the study of basic primer texts considered foundational within the school, including Al-Akhdari, Al-Ashmawaiyyah, ibn Ashir, and Risalat ibn Abī Zayd.
